In recent years, bariatric surgery has seen a notable increase in popularity as a solution for those struggling with severe obesity. This surge is not just a trend but a reflection of the effectiveness and long-term health benefits associated with the procedure. Obesity, characterized by excessive body fat, significantly raises the risk of various health complications such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. Recently we had the pleasure of speaking with  Dr. Shani Belgrave and she provided additional insight.

ITCM: Can you elaborate on why bariatric surgery has become more popular and how it can affect long-term health?

Dr. Shani Belgrave: Bariatric surgery is the most effective and durable treatment available to address morbid obesity.  Obesity, the medical term for excess body fat, increases the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, certain cancers, and a host of other ailments.  Weight loss surgery can help reduce the risk of these problems.  Furthermore, many of these conditions can be reversed or significantly improved after weight loss surgery. The safety profiles for the operations are excellent which makes them a great option for patients dealing with obesity.

ITCM: What are some effective ways to maintain portion control during festive occasions, particularly the holiday season?

Dr. Shani Belgrave: There are several ways to maintain a healthy diet during festive occasions. One thing is to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.  This will reduce the urge to overeat.  Another thing is to avoid eating in front of the television and be mindful when eating.  Don’t eat to feel full. Eat to the point of being content.

ITCM: For those considering bariatric surgery, what specific challenges do they face during the holidays, and what strategies can they use to navigate these?

Dr. Shani Belgrave: One of the challenges is a change in routine during the holidays.  It is the time of year when many attend parties, dinners, and other events where food is served.  One recommendation is to select items high in protein and low in carbohydrates.  Many events will have collard greens, cabbage, roasted chicken, and turkey which are good options. People can also volunteer to bring a dish, that way they know there will be a healthy option.  Also, people can use a smaller plate, and not go for a second helping of food.  It is important to remember that the memories shared with friends and family can still be had while limiting processed foods and avoiding fried foods.

ITCM: How does being part of various medical societies and your role in them enhance your approach to patient care and education?

Dr. Shani Belgrave: My involvement in various medical societies including the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and the Atlanta Medical Association has provided me with access to ongoing medical education which is key to providing optimal patient care.  Being a physician requires lifelong learning and membership in various medical societies fosters that.

ITCM: Could you share some success stories from your patients who have undergone bariatric surgery?

Dr. Shani Belgrave: There are so many success stories that patients have shared following bariatric surgery.  One patient was happy that she was able to walk the entire amusement park and enjoy the day with her family without being winded or feeling tired.  Many patients have reported taking on new passions and hobbies such as doing a 5K or taking a dance class after having improved mobility following weight loss surgery.   Seeing so many patients experience a successful transformation is the reason I am an advocate for bariatric surgery.

ITCM: What role does emotional and educational support play in the success of a patient's journey through bariatric surgery?

Dr. Shani Belgrave: Emotional and educational support is an important part of the bariatric surgery journey and transformation.  Support groups can be very helpful in addition to family support. It is also very important to keep routine follow-ups with your bariatric surgeon to achieve the best outcomes.

ITCM: On your show, The Coalition Talk Show, you often discuss health and wellness.  How do you use this platform to influence public perception and understanding of bariatric surgery and overall health?

Dr. Shani Belgrave: The show is about health, wellness, and inspiration.  The idea is that we as individuals increase our power when we partner and work collectively.  The Coalition is made up of healthcare providers, community activists, and viewers.  We can transform lives by sharing information.  Unfortunately, there are myths and misperceptions about obesity and weight loss surgery and I provide insight into the facts.  Beyond obesity, the show covers a wide variety of topics geared toward improving health and inspiring people to feel empowered to live their best lives. The show is on YouTube and Spotify.

Bariatric surgery stands out as a transformative option in the fight against obesity, offering not only substantial weight loss but also meaningful improvements in overall health and quality of life. Beyond the initial procedure, long-term success requires commitment to lifestyle adjustments and ongoing support. With effective post-surgery strategies and a supportive medical team, patients can navigate challenges, including the holiday season, and maintain their health gains. As awareness grows and more success stories emerge, bariatric surgery continues to empower individuals to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
