ITCM: What are the most common causes of sudden hair loss?

There are many different reasons as to why one would have hair loss. Some of the most common are genetics, hormonal changes, medical illnesses, medications, nutritional deficiencies, stress, hairstyles, and even aging.

ITCM: How can I tell the difference between normal shedding and a hair loss condition?

Normal hair shedding goes through a phase in which 50-100 strands are shed. Usually you are able to see a white bulb at the end of the hair representing the telogen phase. The hair density is still the same throughout the scalp, no signs of scalp irritation, and the hair is not coming out in clumps.

ITCM:  Does diet play a role in hair thinning or breakage?

Yes, vitamin deficiencies play a major role in hair thinning and breakage. Hair is made of Keratin which is a protein, when the body is deficient in protein the hair becomes weaker causing the shaft to break. Iron is important for oxygen delivery to the follicles, deficiencies will cause a lack there of. Other vitamins like: Zinc, Vitamin c, B12, Biotin, Folate, and even fatty acids are all essential for hair strength, growth, follicle repair, and regulating the hair follicle cycle.

ITCM: What treatments are available for male or female pattern baldness?

Treatments like minoxidil, finestride, and many compounds have been used to help patients suffering with these conditions.

ITCM: Can stress really cause hair loss, and if so, how long does it last?

Yes, stress could be considered a number one reason of sudden hair loss. Condition called Telogen Effluvium, is when stress pushes a larger than usual number of hairs into the resting phase. High stress levels release cortisol in the body which then disrupts the balance in hormones causing hair loss. Usually hair loss begins after 2-3 months of the trigger, and will last for about 3 months until the trigger has gone away.

ITCM: Are over-the-counter hair growth products effective or should one seek prescription treatments?

Yes, Rogaine is (minoxidil), sold over the counter that is very effective. But many patients prefer systemic treatments that work faster which can only be obtained with a prescription.
